Why are you not able to use all of the space of a usb stick for ReadyBoost?

Another question raised from our EVO breakout session.

I'm sure at some stage I read somewhere that you have to leave the last 120MB of space free when using ReadyBoost but I'm unable to find the article now, I’ve also come across quite a few makes of USB 2.0 sticks that don’t work so here is some info you might like to know before you rush out and by some new devices.

Windows Vista supports the following form factors:-

    ·         USB 2.0 flash disk

    ·         Secure Digital (SD) cards

    ·         CompactFlash cards

When you first connect the device Vista performs a test to see if the memory meets the following standards:-

    ·         2.5MB / second throughout for 4KB random reads

    ·         1.75MB / second throughout for 512 KB random writes

In addition the device must have a minimum of 256MB available for ReadyBoost to work and currently Vista does not support multiple ReadyBoost Drives.

Microsoft recommend using a ReadyBoost cache equal to 150% of your installed system RAM for best performance.

I notice when I plugged in my external USB drive I could set it up as a ReadyBoost drive but it didn't meet the speed requirements.

When I first installed my SD card in the card reader, my laptop picked up the card but again did not even offer me the option to run the ReadyBoost, I had to uninstall and then reinstall the card reader hardware before it worked ok.

It is possible to view your cards results and performance from the system test for ReadyBoost by:-

    ·         Open Event Viewer (Eventvwr.msc) and click the Applications And Services Logs category in the console tree

    ·          On the left Under this heading, click Microsoft, Windows, and ReadyBoost.

    ·          Under this heading, select Operational

The log entries here include performance test results for both successful and unsuccessful attempts.
