I have a college at work that just treated himself to a new laptop running Windows Vista Ultimate, although he seems very happy and all his software is running great he just can’t seem to get to grips with the new power buttons and how they work from the start menu.
As default the new power button offers you Hibernate if its colour is orange and to turn off your laptop you need to select the arrow to the right of the padlock icon and select the shut down option.
It is possible to change this option and convert the main Hibernate button on your start menu to be just the shut down option if you require, as follows:-
Start – Control Panel – Hardware and Sound
Or under Mobile PC - Change battery settings
Or Start – type power
This will give you the Power Plan Screen
Under your currently selected power scheme click Change power Plan Settings
Then click Change Advanced Power Settings
Expand Power buttons and Lid option
Expand Start Menu Power Button then select the action required i.e. Shut down from the drop down menu and click Apply.
Then OK and close all the open panels and give it a go from the Start Menu
