    problems with WDS

Anyone used WDS to deploy vista yet?  I’ve got a bit of a show stopping problem

I've installed WDS on our RIS server and have installed the install.wim and the boot.wim from the Vista DVD.  I can boot a client and PE downloads I select the Region and Keyboard layout I can then choose which image to deploy but when I click next the next screen I get says The Installation was cancelled Windows could not display the images avaliable for installation. The only option is Ok and the box reboots.

The Vista DVD is a DELL OEM Business Edition, but I have also tried a Business VL version which we have on Select Agreement, same problem.  I have also tried to get this working in our test domain  using a different domain and WDS server, same result.

    Re: problems with WDS

Sorry not come across this before but can I just check a few things in your set up so I can re-create the problem.

At first look to me it seems it could be a permission problem can you confirm the following: -

    1. Is the Microsoft DHCP service on the server that is being used as the Windows Deployment Services server, set DHCP Option 60 to PXEClient and set Windows Deployment Services to Do not listen on Port 67.

On the PXE Server Initial Settings page, click Respond to all (known and unknown) client computers

    2.      Does the account credentials that were entered into the Windows Deployment Services client have permissions to read the .wim files containing the operating system images at \\<WDSServer>\Reminst\Images\<Image Group>

           3.      The architecture type of the booted client (x86, Itanium, x64) does it match the architecture type of the image on the   Windows Deployment Services server.

    Re: problems with WDS

ok the WDS server isn't a DHCP server,  so I've left both option 60 and do not listen on port 67 in the default unchecked position.

I'm using a domain admin account in the WDS client so that does have permission to read the wim files, and the architecture type being used is x86

Looking on technet forums there is another person having the same issue, andhe thinks its a locale issue.

    Cheers

    Re: problems with WDS

I now have a fix for this! It looks like a crap boot.wim on DELL OEM disks. I replaced the boot.wim with one from a select version of Vista and it now works! There is a big difference in the size between the boot.wim's the DELL one is around 140Mb compared to the select at 119Mb.  Thanks goes to a bloke on technet forums for this fix.
