    Windows SideShow Debugger

For all Windows SideShow enthusiasts i-mate released the first ALPHA build of a Windows SideShow Debugger.

This debugger was developed to help people understand how Windows SideShow works in order to help gadget developers create their very own Windows SideShow gadgets.

You can use this tool in conjunction with the .NET SideShow components: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=06fa2ace-a42d-4117-821c-bce80786f1c4&DisplayLang=en

The tool can be downloaded here: http://www.clubimate.com/t-WINGADRV.aspx

Please be aware that it is supplied as-is and therefore will be unsupported.  You can however email sideshowdev@imate.com but I cannot make any guarantees that these emails will be answered.

    Have fun!

Very cool.  But I'm going to have to express my ignorance and ask:  What is Windows Sideshow?

    Re: Windows SideShow Debugger

Windows SideShow is a new technology in Windows Vista centered around sending textual (and some image) data to external devices.  These devices can take the form of the i-mate Momento Digital Photo Frame (http://www.momentolive.com) that can display single lines of data to a Windows Mobile device that can interact with the data.  See http://www.sideshowdevices.com for more upcoming devices.

A gadget developer simply targets the Windows SideShow framework and any devices that support this framework can execute the gadget.

A few gadgets are available at the moment.  The best is probably the Windows Media Player gadget.  With this gadget Momento is able to display the user the current playing track on your PC but a full Windows SideShow device would allow the user to interact with the music (changing the track, adding tracks to the Now Playing list etc...).

The Windows SideShow debugger emulates a full Windows SideShow device and allows developers to peek into the mechanics of executing a gadget on a device to help them understand how best to optimise their gadgets.

Other examples of gadgets include an Email reader, RSS reader, Weather reports, traffic cameras, upcoming calendar appointments.

The folks over at Engadget have got a screenshot showing SideShow content on the Momento Photo Frame: http://www.engadget.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-i-mate-momento-70/168188/

Very very cool.  How many devices are there that support this at the moment?  Looks very interesting.

    Re: Windows SideShow Debugger

2 at the moment that I am aware of (but there are alot more coming)

The i-mate Momento Digital Photo Frame (available in Currys/PC World).  I recorded a video with Microsoft's James Senior a couple of months ago demonstrating Momento's SideShow capabilities: http://blogs.msdn.com/ptstv/archive/2007/01/18/partner-spotlight-i-mate-sideshow.aspx

Asus have released a SideShow laptop whereby an external screen acts as a SideShow host: http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/02/26/asus_w5fe_windows_vista_laptop/.  I got to have a play with this laptop last year, it is very cool!

i-mate are releasing SideShow compatible mobile phones in the summer.

See http://www.sideshowdevices.com for information on more SideShow devices.
